What “marine-grade” actually means
Marine-grade isn’t a marketing word. In the context of dock and boathouse electrical, it means: fixtures with sealed housings rated for wet locations and salt exposure, stainless-steel or bronze hardware instead of standard galvanized (galvanized rusts through in a couple of seasons here), tinned copper conductors that resist corrosion at the copper strand level, weatherproof in-use covers on every receptacle, PVC-coated or fiberglass conduit instead of EMT (which pits and corrodes fast), and dielectric-filled connectors on every underwater or submersible splice.
Standard exterior electrical parts (the ones you’d use on a covered patio in Robertsdale) will not survive a Gulf Shores dock. Dock and pier lighting
Good dock lighting does three things at once: it makes the walk out safe after dark, it gives you enough light to work on gear or clean a fish without hauling a flashlight, and it doesn’t blind your boat or your neighbor’s. Wave Electric installs LED post lights, low-profile deck lights recessed into the decking, pier-edge lights on the pilings, and underwater fixtures for night-fishing lights and aesthetics.
Layout matters as much as fixture choice. A single bright flood at the shore end of a long pier leaves the far end dark and casts glare backward toward the house. A run of lower-output fixtures spaced along the pier gives you even coverage and preserves your night vision. For homes on the bay in Fairhope or Point Clear where the dock is a nightly destination, Jimmy will lay out the fixtures for the actual use, not the catalog picture.
Every circuit is GFCI-protected at the source. That’s not optional. Water, salt, and 120V current together are how people get killed, and GFCI is the protection that keeps a fault from becoming a fatality.
Boathouse wiring
A boathouse is a small building over the water, and the electrical inside it needs to be built for that. Wave Electric handles the full boathouse electrical scope: a feeder from the main house or a shore-side subpanel, a subpanel at the boathouse itself when the load justifies it, interior lighting on the lift bay and any storage areas, GFCI-protected receptacles for chargers and tools, exterior lighting under the eaves and on the dock, and dedicated circuits for boat lift motors, fish freezers, and any water-well or bait-tank pumps.
The panel and any enclosures inside a boathouse need to be sealed against the humidity that lives inside a structure that has open water underneath it forty-two weeks a year. Standard indoor panels rust from the inside out down here. Jimmy uses NEMA 3R or 4X rated enclosures depending on the exposure and mounts them where they’ll stay dry.
Boat lift wiring
Boat lifts are the single biggest electrical load on most residential docks. A lift motor needs a properly sized dedicated circuit, a rated disconnect within sight of the lift, GFCI protection, and marine-rated wire from the disconnect out to the motor. Wave Electric handles new lift installations, motor replacements on existing lifts, and troubleshooting when a lift stops working (which is almost always a corroded connection, a failed capacitor, or a limit switch that’s gotten wet).
Salt corrosion is the whole problem
Every failure mode Wave Electric sees on coastal docks and boathouses traces back to corrosion. A dock light that quit working is almost never a bad fixture; it’s usually a corroded splice inside a box that filled with humid air and then condensed. A GFCI that keeps tripping is usually a compromised weatherhead or a receptacle whose contacts have oxidized enough to leak current to ground. A boat lift motor that trips a breaker is usually a moisture-damaged winding, and once the winding’s compromised, the motor is on borrowed time.
Jimmy fights corrosion three ways on every install: material selection (marine-rated everything, no compromises on hardware), proper sealing (weatherproof in-use covers, listed splice enclosures, dielectric grease on every threaded connection), and drainage (nothing is installed in a way that lets water pool inside it). None of that is expensive when it’s done at install. All of it is expensive when it fails.
Hurricane season and inspection
June through November is hurricane season on the Gulf Coast, and dock electrical is exposed. A named storm can push tide levels ten feet higher than normal for hours, submerging fixtures and boxes that live comfortably above the water the rest of the year. After a storm, every dock and boathouse in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach that had electrical damage needs a licensed electrician’s eye before anything gets re-energized.
