Grounding and bonding are the invisible safety layer of every electrical system, and they’re the layer most likely to be wrong on an older Baldwin County home. There’s a simple way to think about the difference. Grounding is how a fault gets out of your house and back to the utility, safely. Bonding is how everything metal inside your house stays at the same electrical potential, so a fault that energizes one metal object doesn’t shock you when you touch a different one. The two systems work together, and neither works alone.

Why grounding fails on older Baldwin County homes

A lot of homes in Fairhope, Daphne, Spanish Fort, Foley, and Robertsdale were built before current grounding standards existed. What you often find behind the panel of a home built in the 1960s or 1970s is a two-wire system that was never upgraded, a single ground clamp on a cold-water pipe that’s since been partially replaced with PEX (which doesn’t conduct), a driven ground rod that corroded off years ago, or a grounding conductor that got cut during a remodel and never got reconnected.

Coastal humidity and salt air make the problem worse. Ground clamps at the water pipe corrode. Ground rods in sandy Gulf Coast soil don’t always seat well and can lose contact with moist earth during dry stretches. Bonding jumpers around a water meter get skipped when a plumber swaps the meter. None of it makes the lights flicker, so most homeowners never know until a storm-driven surge takes out a major appliance or an outlet tester reads open ground during a home inspection.

Jimmy’s inspection walk-through checks all of it: the grounding electrode conductor from the panel out to the rods and the water line, the bonding jumper around the water meter, the ground bar in the panel itself, and whether the neutral and ground are properly separated at the main panel and at any subpanels.

When you need grounding or bonding work

  • You’re adding a subpanel in a detached garage, shop, or ADU and the grounding needs to be set up correctly at that building
  • You have PEX or PVC replacing what used to be metal water piping (the water line is often no longer a valid ground path)

Panel grounding, done right

The main service panel is where most grounding decisions get made. At the panel, the grounding electrode conductor ties the system to the grounding electrode system: usually two ground rods driven at least six feet apart, bonded to the panel, and, where available, a connection to the metal underground water pipe within the first five feet of where it enters the building. The neutral and the ground bond together at the main panel and only at the main panel; downstream of that, they stay separate.

That last point matters. A shockingly common mistake in older Baldwin County homes is a subpanel where the neutral and ground are still bonded together after the main. That turns the ground wire into a parallel neutral, which means normal current is flowing through the ground path all the time, and any metal object bonded to that ground can end up with voltage on it. Jimmy checks for this on every service call at an older home and corrects it when he finds it.

Pool and hot tub bonding

Pool and hot tub bonding is the most safety-critical bonding work Wave Electric does, and it’s the work that most gets shortcut by people who shouldn’t be doing it. NEC Article 680 requires an equipotential bonding grid around every pool and hot tub. That means the pool shell reinforcement, the deck reinforcement within three feet of the pool, the pump motor, the light niche, any metal ladders or handrails, and any metal within five feet of the water all have to be tied together with a #8 copper bonding conductor. The idea is to eliminate voltage differences between anything a swimmer might touch, so a fault anywhere in the system can’t drive current through a person standing in the water.

Missing or corroded bonding is one of the most common reasons for the tingle-in-the-water problem homeowners report on older pools around Gulf Shores, Orange Beach, and the bay. Salt water and salt air corrode bonding clamps. A pump replacement done by someone who didn’t know to re-bond the new motor leaves a break in the grid. A metal ladder added later without a bonding lug isn’t tied in.

For an existing pool with a tingle or a failed inspection, he traces every bond, replaces corroded clamps, adds missing bonds, and tests the equipotential grid before energizing anything. Hot tub bonding follows the same rules on a smaller scale: the tub shell, the pump, and any metal within five feet all tied together.

Commercial and industrial grounding
